Focus on solving a real problem, one that makes a difference. #phdchat http://prof.so
Own your problem. Make it yours. Keep it at the front of your mind, always. #phdchat http://prof.so
Print the cover of your thesis and place it in a binder. You have started. #phdchat http://prof.so
Let go of the handrail, swim away from the side. Research requires risks. #phdchat http://prof.so
Take pride in your craft. #phdchat http://prof.so
Talk to as many people as you can. Share your ideas as widely as you can. #phdchat http://prof.so
The big danger is not that somebody will steal your ideas but that nobody will take any interest. #phdchat http://prof.so
Write every day. #phdchat http://prof.so
Go to see your supervisor when you have nothing to show. Do not hide. That is when they can help most. #phdchat http://prof.so
Remember if you leave it more than a fortnight your supervisor may well have forgotten what you discussed. #phdchat http://prof.so
Do not make grand plans. Just make every day count. #phdchat http://prof.so
Three years seems like a lot of time. It is not, the second year will disappear really quickly. #phdchat http://prof.so
Be ready to abandon ideas if they do not work but do not kill them before they have had a chance to fly. #phdchat http://prof.so
The most difficult part of research is not coming up with ideas but exposing them to rigorous testing. #phdchat http://prof.so
Follow courses, it is an easy way to learn. #phdchat http://prof.so
Write for conferences, go to see people, give talks, make contacts, network. #phdchat http://prof.so
Science is a community. You support it, it will support you. #phdchat http://prof.so
Build waypoints to give your research programme a structure. #phdchat http://prof.so
Keep accurate bibliographic records. That paper may not seem relevant now but could prove so later. #phdchat http://prof.so
Read for a purpose. #phdchat http://prof.so
Always have a practical task running alongside reading and writing. Swap tasks if you lose focus. #phdchat http://prof.so
Never stare at a blank piece of paper. #phdchat http://prof.so
Play with ideas, problems and techniques. #phdchat http://prof.so
Ask a question if you do not understand. Never feel afraid of looking foolish. #phdchat http://prof.so
If somebody does not understand your work it is usually because of your failure to explain it clearly. #phdchat http://prof.so
High quality critical analysis is like gold dust. Seek it out. Welcome it. However painful. #phdchat http://prof.so
Work a regular day, work regular hours, take weekends off. Research is a marathon not a sprint. #phdchat http://prof.so
Keep a diary. #phdchat http://prof.so
Back up. Back up. Back up. #phdchat http://prof.so
And, oh yes, back up. #phdchat http://prof.so

Where Does Product Management Belong in the Organization? (via Pragmatic Marketing)
“As companies grow, the product management role entails three or four functions: product strategy, technical product management, product marketing, and field marketing. It is a big job. In a small company, all of these functions are performed by one person. In large companies, they are performed by four departments. But they are all part of product management.
Product Management’s reporting structure corresponds to the results the company can expect from Product Management. In Development, product managers shepherd the development projects; in Marketing, they provide technical content; in Sales, they become sales support engineers.”
Researchers for Mars Drinks UK asked 2001 male and female office workers across Britain about their average work day, including employees in marketing, finance, creative, HR, legal and IT sectors.
Throughout the day, creative workers receive 31 emails and send 28, both make and receive 24 phone calls and drink an average of three cups of tea or coffee.
Creative workers said they have been in their current position for an average of six years and eight months, one month lower than the national average.

“The economic trends are super clear. The technical roles are in demand. Even in what is currently a very difficult situation for our country in unemployment. There’s a huge shortage of engineers who can build products like Facebook. And women need to have their fair share of those seats,” Facebook’s chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg said.

Wearing makeup … increases people’s perceptions of a woman’s likability, her competence and (provided she does not overdo it) her trustworthiness, according to a new study, which also confirmed what is obvious: that cosmetics boost a woman’s attractiveness.

1) Being creative. Creativity is not just about generating a lot of ideas. Its about having the judgement to know which of them are any good.
2) Mastering a body of work. By the time you graduate, by the time you take your oral exams, you should be a leading authority on something.
3) Remaining aware of the rest. A Ph. D. is a well-rounded individual who keeps up on the big questions in other fields. At the very least, you should be able to teach an up-to-date Introductory course (and I don’t mean, Introduction to Ant Sociometry, I mean Introduction to Biology).
4) Communicating well. You can’t convey your discoveries, or those of the scientific community, unless you can write well and speak well and tailor your message to your audience. Teaching and writing a scientific paper are the same thing.
5) Mastering your time. How do you squeeze all this in and still lead a life that is not dictated only by work? This is where the tactics comes in.

job seekers need to view the employment marketplace as an array of specific opportunities, each with its own characteristics. “Look at it open-minded and without any prejudice,” he says. “There will be good and bad positions offered in both academia and industry.”

Christianne Corbett, a senior researcher for the American Association of University Women and co-author of the 2010 report “Why So Few?,” is blunt: “The growth of technology is driven by the people who are designing it. Without women at the design table, the interests of half the population will basically be ignored.” Adds Lucy Sanders, CEO of the National Center for Women and Information Technology: “We don’t know what women would invent because by and large right now, they are not.”
The AIGA|Aquent Survey of Design Salaries 2011 draws from an extensive pool of designers and others allied with the profession nationwide, and includes responses from more than 7,000 design professionals. This year’s survey featured a revised list of positions and descriptions for which data were collected.
